A secretary for the state of Tennessee, she recorded a spirited ragtimey version of the old fiddle tune "Down Yonder' ('34 hit by Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers) for a top 10 pop hit '51. She had to sue the Tennessee label for royalties; had a sizeable hit with "Elmer's Tune' '53 on Republic, recorded for many other labels and remained a regular on the Grand Ole Opry.
