US bluegrass group formed '71 by remaining members of Flying Burrito Brothers: Herb Pedersen (b 27 April '44, Berkeley CA), banjo; Byron Berline (b 6 July '44, Cladwell KS), fiddle; Kenny Wertz, guitar; Roger Bush, bass. Berline had worked for Bill Monroe '66--7; won National Fiddle Championship '64--65--70; formed own band Sundance '75. Pederson, a key musician in the country-rock scene, worked with Flatt and Scruggs '67, replaced Doug Dillard in the Dillards '67--71, also worked with Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Dan Fogelberg etc. Alan Munde (ex-Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys) replaced Pederson '73. LPs incl. Traitor In Our Midst '73, Don't Give Up Your Day Job '74 (United Artists); Live '75, Sunny Side Of The Mountain '76, What A Way To Make A Living '77 (Transatlantic); From The Beginning '78 (Sunset), All This And Money Too '81 (Ridge Runner), American And Clean '82, Bluegrass Tonight '85 and several more LPs on Flying Fish: first CD is Hello, Operator ... This Is Country Gazette '91. Berline albums on Sugar Hill and Flying Fish now incl. CDs And Now They Are Four (with Dan Crary and John Hickman) and Jumpin' The Strings.
