CARSON Fiddlin' John

(b 23 March 1868, Fannin Co. GA; d 11 Dec. '49) Pioneer hillbilly fiddler, recording artist. Worked as jockey, in cotton mills, house painting; became principal figure at annual Atlanta fiddlers' convention: Champion Fiddler of Georgia seven times. Radio debut on WSB Atlanta '22; first record "The Little Old Log Cabin In The Lane', recorded by Ralph Peer for Okeh on 14 June '23, thought to be the first hillbilly (country) music ever released. Member of Virginia Reelers '24; group made more than 150 sides for Okeh. More records on Victor from '34; best known tunes incl. "Boston Burglar', "Didn't He Ramble', "The Letter Edged In Black'. Worked as lift operator in Atlanta after '40. Compilation album The Old Hen Cackled And The Rooster's Gonna Crow on Rounder '79.
