Donald's Blog

This old house was only a few blocks from the state Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin. All the neighborhood cats lived in the basement during the winter. The house has long since been torn down, but in 1972 there were AR2ax speakers in the front room, and a lot of good music was heard there.

Business news

On the front page of the Money & Investing section today, it is reported that investors worry about uncertainty, but that "one of the few continued bright spots in the markets" is "healthy corporate profits". So that's all right then.
On the op-ed page, Michael J. Boskin (Stanford University, Hoover Institution) says that "the recession ended three years ago, while the recovery has been distressingly anemic." Well, if our economic growth is sluggish, maybe that's because we've already got enough stuff. There must be some reason why the corporations are sitting on their healthy profits instead of inventing, producing, marketing, creating jobs; what's to be uncertain about, when taxes are as low as they've been for 50 years? Mr Boskin disapproves of President Obama saying "The private sector is doing just fine", while corporate profits are said to be healthy. There must be something in the water at Stanford.
On the same page, David Gelernter, a professor of computer science at Yale, wants a return to American values for Independence Day. After all, we're pretty wonderful: "We have seen the near eradication of race prejudice in a mere two generations--an astounding achievement." Tell that to the huge proportion of black people in prison. What are the figures? African-Americans consume 15% of the illegal drugs but do 90% of the jail time? Something like that.
